Bio:

Vasily Reshchuk was born in Innokentyevka Village in the Primorye Region of Russia. A graduate of the Vladivostok College of Art, Vasily also studied for two years at the Far Eastern School of Fine Arts. He has dedicated his life to both painting and cinematography and excelled in both of them.

From 1966 to 1993, he worked at the Daltelefilm Documentary Film Studio as a top-rated cameraman. He filmed 99 documentary films, including 15 in which he was the director. Ten of his films received national and international awards. Vasily’s ability to capture the mood and the light is what distinguished his work in cinematography. Each film shot was carefully composed and expressive. This characteristic is also evident in his work as a painter.

The creative work of a cameraman demanded never-ending travel through most of the Far East (Primorye, the Arctic, Kamchatka…), Central Russia, and internationally to Italy, Senegal, Australia, Guinea and Singapore. Vasily Reshchuk always carried along his case of paints, brushes and pencils.

The short business trips, tight filming schedules, and the necessity to literally find precious time for painting, dictated his choice of painting mediums to gouache, tempera, watercolor and pastel. Quick dry times were essential as well as the compact nature of works on paper. He continues to work in those same mediums today.

Vasily retired early from cinematography due to a chronic illness and continues to paint as his health allows. He lives with his wife Valentina in an apartment on the outskirts of Vladivostok, Russia.
