Anne Belov was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her family moved to Pittsburgh when she was six. Starting in fourth grade, Anne attended Saturday art classes at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. She continued to take art classes throughout high school at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Carnegie Mellon University. Anne attended Temple University for two years before transferring to Philadelphia College of Art where she received her BFA in painting. She then proceeded to earn her MFA from the University of Washington.
After living in Seattle for ten years, Anne moved to Whidbey Island to pursue painting full-time. In the 1990s, she formed an interest in printmaking, creating several editions of lithographs at Stone Press. After building her studio, she acquired an etching press to continue working on all forms of printmaking, including monoprints, monotypes, and collagraph. In 2008, Anne’s creative endeavors expanded further to include writing, illustrating, and cartooning. She has authored a series of children’s books called “The Panda Chronicles.”
The subject of Anne’s paintings varies, but whether painting interiors, landscapes, cityscapes, or countryside, everything starts with capturing light and how it falls on objects. She is fascinated with painting the real world in a realistic manner and she explains that Realism is not about reporting, but about bringing to life a believable fiction, which tells a story and engages the viewer. While mostly painting in oil, Anne has increasingly used traditional egg tempera in her work. While a time-consuming medium, she finds the resulting detail and depth of color it creates incredibly rewarding.
