Valerie Collymore was born in the United States and moved to the south of France at the age of 9. Growing up, she lived in Nice and Villefranche-sur-mer with her mother, Sylvia, who encouraged Valerie’s artistic talent by taking her to art museums across western Europe and on weekend excursions to sites once frequented by such artists as Renoir, Cezanne, Monet, and Pissarro. Through these trips, Valerie’s love of French Impressionism was born.
Upon graduating from a French high school at the age of 18, Valerie returned to the US to pursue a career in medicine, temporarily leaving behind her passion for art. In 2008, Valerie took an art class which reawakened this passion, resulting in her decision to retire her medical career and focus on art full-time. In her yearly trips to Provence, Valerie is routinely inspired by the sun-drenched and colorful regions of her childhood.
Through her paintings of the southern French countryside, Valerie aims to show reverence for the traditions and techniques of the French Impressionists. She uses her parallel brushstrokes to capture the movement and gradual shifts in light and color of French landscapes, seascapes, and curved wooden boats. In concert with Valerie’s love of painting is her passion for teaching. Valerie consistently sells out workshops and is an instructor to dozens of weekly and monthly students, including participants in the Emerging Artist Program at the Collymore Atelier. She currently lives in the greater Seattle area with her husband, Victor.
