Beth Flor studied art at the University of Colorado, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and earned a BFA degree in 1972. Two years later, she moved to the Southeast Alaska town of Petersburg with her husband. As their children grew older, she began submitting her work to juried shows and, since 1995, she has been included in over seventy-five exhibitions and has won numerous awards. In 2014, Beth had a solo show of forty-five paintings at the International Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas. She is a Signature Member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society and a Fellow of the American Artist’s Professional League.
Inspired by artists such as Dean Mitchell, Alex Powers, Richard Schmidt, and Burton Silverman, Beth has painted in the realistic tradition for over thirty years. She aims for her oil paintings to reflect reality like a pleasant memory, as a poetic interpretation of the everyday. Working only by natural light, Beth paints still lifes because they allow her to control the composition and to focus on the transient structures and design elements created by the interaction of light on her subject. Through her process, Beth emphasizes light’s transformative quality to highlight the beauty of otherwise ordinary objects.
