Kutscher Bio

Ted Kutscher has been drawing and painting in some manner since childhood. In high school and college, when selling newspaper advertising to earn money, he found it effective to illustrate ideas for advertisers, thus laying the foundation for the narrative element that underlies many of his paintings today. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Dartmouth College, Ted earned a law degree from the University of Denver. During law school, Ted’s mother, a painter herself, gave him his first paint box with oil paints. He has been painting regularly ever since.

Ted draws inspiration from the Impressionists, the Nabis, such as Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard, the wellspring American illustrator-painters Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, and NC Wyeth, and painters of the California School Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud. In his own work, Ted focuses on capturing the emotional sense of places and people, more than likeness. He finds that the joy of painting is the same as its challenge, that is to understand and convey the essence of the scene, how it strikes his senses and emotions. Above all, he feels that a successful painting is essentially a path to emotive and sensual memory of the viewer.

Ted has enjoyed a nearly forty-year career as a tax and estate planning lawyer and financial planner in Seattle. He is also a trustee of Gage Academy of Art. He and his wife live on Vashon Island, Washington, where they own a farmhouse built in 1897. They share a son and daughter who work and live in Seattle.
