Renlie Bio

Frank Renlie graduated from the Burnley School of Professional Art (currently known as The Art Institute of Seattle). During school, he was particularly inspired by his instructors William Cumming and James Edward Peck. Following graduation, Frank began a forty-year career as a freelance illustrator. He was an active member of the Society of Illustrators in New York and his illustrations were published throughout the United States, France, and Germany. During this time, Frank also submitted his paintings to juried shows throughout the Northwest, showing in group exhibitions at Seattle Art Museum’s Northwest Annual, Frye Art Museum, Museum of History and Industry (MOHI), Bellevue Art Museum’s Arts & Crafts Fair, and The Best of the Northwest.

Now retired from illustration, though continuing to use strong concepts, whimsy, and humor in his work, Frank is a full-time painter. He has exhibited his paintings across the United States and internationally in Mexico, England, and Israel. For the kind of work that he produces now, Frank considers himself self-taught. He often plays with words and phrases, painting what comes to mind and letting concepts and ideas just happen rather than letting himself overthink them. Above all, Frank hopes that his paintings give the viewer a great big smile. He currently lives and works in Lake Forest Park and Camano Island.
