Vasily Reshchuk was born in Innokentyevka Village in the Primorye Region of Russia. He graduated from Vladivostok College of Art and also studied for two years at the Far Eastern School of Fine Arts. From 1966 to 1993, Vasily worked at the Daltelefilm Documentary Film Studio as a top-rated cameraman. He filmed ninety-nine documentaries, serving as the director on fifteen films. Ten of his films received national and international rewards. As a filmmaker, Vasily was constantly traveling through the Far East, Central Russia, and internationally to countries including Italy, Senegal, Australia, Guinea, and Singapore. During his travels, he always carried along his case of paints, brushes, and pencils.
The constant business trips and tight filming schedules required by work as a cinematographer meant that Vasily had precious little time to paint, necessitating his use of pastels and fast-drying paint, including gouache, tempera, and watercolor. He continues to work in these mediums today. Vasily’s ability to capture mood and light distinguishes his films as well as his paintings. He believes the essence of conveying the spirit of a time and place is through an emotional approach to the image of reality.
Vasily currently lives with his wife on the outskirts of Vladivostok. He often paints en plein air the areas surrounding his home. Those who pass by often remark how places they considered dull and gray seem to transform and blossom on his canvas. Vasily takes great joy in finding this hidden beauty and sharing his vision with others.
