Karen Rieger was born in Toronto. Her childhood summers were filled with weekend road trips to the countryside and beyond, feeding her visual archive with images of natural landscapes viewed from the car window. Karen graduated from the University of Toronto and received her art education from The Ontario College of Art and The Art Center of Toronto’s Central Technical School.
Inspired by the work of Klimt, Matisse, and Modigliani, Karen uses flat areas of color and avoids perspective, emphasizing each painting as an entity itself rather than trying to create an illusion of reality. She uses patterns to unite the foreground and background, faces with generalized features, and still lifes from her imagination, culminating in paintings which suggest a universality instead of specific, self-contained scenes. Color is the most important part of Karen’s process, applied using several layers of paint to create depth and richness. She currently lives in Toronto.
