Charles Smith’s interest in design emerged from being a student of architecture. He acquired skills in drawing and painting at Eastern Washington University, where he earned a BFA. Following graduation, Charles embarked on a career in business, working as a corporate executive in New York City. During this time, trips to Europe provided inspiration for his artistic pursuits. Charles studied in pastels while living in New York and, upon his return to the Pacific Northwest, trained in the Still Life, Drawing, and Painting Ateliers at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle.
In his oil paintings, Charles pays visual homage to both European and American painters, including Jan van Eyck, Rembrandt, Jean-Baptiste Chardin, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, William Nicholson, and landscape painters Sanford Gifford and Albert Bierstadt. Charles considers his work “classically inspired with surreal contradictions,” and bases his paintings on life observation and imagery, often flowing from the use of personal objects as the origin of inspiration. He endeavors to create lasting work which functions as a filter on society, revealing itself over time.
