Stevens Bio

Anne Hayden Stevens was raised in Northern California. She received her BFA in Printmaking & Drawing with High Distinction from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. She then earned a Master of Arts Degree in Design from UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design. Anne has been working as a professional artist since 1996 and her work is housed in private and public collections across the United States, including permanent collections in Harvard University’s Houghton Library, UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library, and Columbia University’s Butler Library. She spent ten years in Seattle where she taught drawing & digital media at the University of Washington and has fifteen years of experience as an interdisciplinary arts educator.

Inspired by California figurative artists Richard Diebenkorn and Elmer Bischoff, along with the California Funk Movement, Anne has worked across a range of mediums, including oil painting, watercolor, collage, printmaking, drawing, and public art. She considers herself a narrative painter with a conceptual focus on women’s experiences in the landscape. Recently, she has explored the myth of Narcissus in her work, reimagining the figure as a woman. In her Narcissus paintings, as well as her other artistic pursuits, Anne uses landscape elements as metaphor for the challenges we all face, often exploring themes of marginalization and systemic inequality. Anne currently works as the Creative Director of an education research and design program at Northwestern University. She lives with her husband in Wilmette, Illinois.
