LiDoña Wagner grew up in the Midwestern United States. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, History, and Math from the University of Texas at Austin in 1962. She also earned a Master’s Degree in Journalism & Communication from the University of Oregon. LiDoña’s artistic education began with watercolor classes in British Columbia between 1991 – 1997, followed by mixed media workshops with many contemporary artists, including Virginia Cobb, Barbara Nechis, and Carrie Burns Brown, from 1998 – 2003. She claims that her personal style developed in seven two-week residencies with artist Katherine Chang Liu between 2003 – 2014.
During thirty years of performing research in Africa, teaching in Chicago’s inner city, and engaging in community organization with villagers in remote regions across the world, LiDoña became aware of a thread of humanity that transcends all cultural differences. Through her travel and research, she has participated in movements promoting independence, women’s empowerment, community development, religious tolerance, and environmental conservation. LiDoña is an accomplished educator and author, publishing two books with The National Library of Poetry, along with books based on her life and research, “Seed of Imagination” and “Pilgrimage: Wonder, Encounter, Witness.”
LiDoña has worked in watercolor, collage, acrylic paint, sculpture, and printmaking. Her research and experience working with underprivileged people and communities has informed her unique approach. LiDoña’s work is especially focused on communal values, ancient traditions, and the elements of life that connect all of humanity, such as our shared African origins. LiDoña has been shaped by her relationships with people across the globe and the multitude of experiences, both rewarding and challenging, she has had along the way. It is her goal that her art both educates the viewer and causes them to reflect on the universal human experience.
