Lou Wall earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in 1973. Following graduation, she embarked on her professional career as an Organizational Design Specialist for US West Communications, a position which she held for twenty-three years. She then returned to school and, in 2000, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design and Illustration from Cornish College of the Arts. Upon completion of her program, Lou focused on art full-time and began showing her work at festivals and museums in the greater Seattle area. Lou has permanent collections with Century National Properties in Seal Beach, CA and the University of Washington Medical Center. She received the Nora Fischer Memorial Award at the 2003 Edmonds Arts Festival.
Lou works primarily in acrylic painting and mixed media collage, often exploring the line between real and imagined scenes. Initially painting in a more representational style, depicting landscapes grounded in the real world, Lou started incorporating figures into her paintings, but found that one figure on the canvas seemed lonely and without voice. Exploring ways to move beyond a single figure, she began using elements of her drawings to create collages, shifting her focus toward more abstract mixed-media pieces. Lou’s process involves painting, drawing, inserting painted or printed images and photographs, and continuing to add and subtract until arriving at a “finished” spot. The subject of each piece can range from classical references to “the quirky bits of human experience.” Lou is inspired by transition, memory, and the nuance of natural happenstance. Her distinctive technique allows for exploration of these themes through color and texture, creating complex images with stories to tell.
